Scholarships and Fellowships
Scholarships
The conference organizers recognize the importance of providing support to maximize the number of individuals from low- and middle-income countries who participate in the World Conference on Tobacco OR Health. immediately following the UICC World Cancer Congress. A limited number of scholarships may be awarded to individuals who meet specific criteria to attend both conferences and further develop relationships and synergy between cancer control and tobacco control. Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis.
Scholarships provide support to an individual for some or all of the following costs:
- Round-trip, economy airfare from country of residence to Washington, D.C.
- Conference registration fee
- Accommodation in Washington, D.C. during the Conference
Eligibility
Applicants for a scholarship must:
- Work in tobacco control or a related field
- Have adequate command of English to participate in the conference
- Work/live in a low- or middle-income country
- Have no connections to the tobacco industry
- Submit an abstract to the conference by the application deadline of November 30, 2005

Timetable
- The online and paper application will be available in September 2005.
- Completed applications and abstracts must be received by November 30, 2005 in order to be considered.
- Applicants will be notified regarding their acceptance status no later than February 2006.
Fellowship Program
The conference organizers are pleased to offer a Fellows program. The objectives of the WCTOH Fellows program are to:
- Strengthen global leadership in tobacco control
- Exchange successful ideas and strategies to create social, political, and economic change to reduce tobacco use and exposure
- Expand and strengthen the understanding and application of tobacco control policy changes
- Create and/or establish ongoing networks for global tobacco control
Fellowships will be awarded on a competitive basis and will include:
- 2.5 day pre-conference Fellows training.
- Participation in the WCTOH.
- Opportunity to apply for post-conference seed grants.
- Economy, round-trip air travel from country of residence to Washington, D.C.
- Accommodation in Washington, D.C. during the pre-conference training and conference.
- Conference registration fee and a small per diem.
Fellows Pre-Conference Training
The pre-conference training enables Fellows to learn from each other through focused facilitation to promote the interactive exchange of experience and information. The training fosters practical application of the content to Fellows’ home environments.
Topics for the Fellows training will be formed by the specific environmental and professional interests and needs of the Fellows selected for 2006.
Eligibility
Individuals who wish to apply to participate in the Fellows program must meet the following criteria:
- Live/work in a low- or middle-income country
- Work or study in tobacco control or a related field
- Employment or study of practical importance in his/her country
- Educational and/or professional background that qualifies her/him to benefit from short, intensive program
- No connections to the tobacco industry
- Sufficient command of English to participate in the conference
- Ability to make practical use of skills and knowledge to mobilize others
